We have heard about self-care and how this is important for our wellbeing. Let’s dig in deeper. I wanted to write about emotional self-care because is it the least known types and the most important one of all. Our emotions can dictate behaviors; if we are experiencing sadness, even the most beautiful scene before us can seem gloomy. Our emotional wellbeing is closely attached to the quality of our interpersonal relationships. For example; if you have a fight with your significant other, this might be the focus of your entire emotional energy in one day. This can cause you to neglect the details of other experiences around you, make choices that are not consistent with your character and have negative interactions with others around you throughout the day. This is the reason why emotional wellbeing is the most important type of self-care.
So how do we take care of this? Some tips include:
-Making time to connect with those individuals that are important in your life. Taking five minutes to have a conversation via phone or in person, or text someone you care about can be beneficial.
-If you’re currently in a “bad place” with someone you care about, make the move to resolve it. Make it a priority to be at peace with those you care about. In the case, this is not possible, or it is difficult, it is a good idea to do the best you can; attempt a conversation, ask for forgiveness for your part, forgive or leave the door open for them to come back when they’re ready.
-Set boundaries with those who make you feel uncomfortable. The old “just say no” to things you might feel obligated to do. Boundaries is the way to love yourself and love others at the same time.
-Find places and spaces that bring you joy. Those places can be your home, a friend’s place, a museum, a park or any other place that makes you feel at peace with yourself and others.

-Positive affirmations. Make a list of your qualities, abilities, gifts, and what you feel great doing. Place yourself self-love notes to remind you of those things. If you have a bad day, just look back at the list and remind yourself “the way I feel does not determine/change/lessen my worth”.
-Find your passion. What are you passionate about? If you’re not sure, then take time to reflect on your values and find that passion. Don’t forget to explore new experiences to find your passion. How do you know you are the best pianist if you’ve never tried to play the piano? Keep discovering aspects of yourself.
